The Appreciative Inquiry Process — VisionLogic

A VisionLogic Process Tool

The Appreciative Inquiry Process

Strengths-based change — the 5-D cycle, for yourself or any system you belong to.

Awareness · Begin

From “what’s broken?” to “what gives life?”

Appreciative Inquiry builds change on strengths rather than deficits. Choose who this inquiry is for, name the one thing you’d love to grow more of, and you’ll be guided through all five phases with questions shaped to your world.

Suggestions drawn from the Six Human Needs (Robbins–Madanes). Pick one to fill the box below, then edit it freely — or write your own.

In Appreciative Inquiry, the topic we choose to study is the change we begin. Frame it toward what you want — not away from what you fear. You can refine it in the Define phase.

Why it works — the ten principles
The classic five
Constructionist — words create worlds
Simultaneity — asking begins change
Poetic — what we study grows
Anticipatory — images pull the future
Positive — positivity fuels momentum
Five that extend them
Wholeness — the whole system, together
Enactment — be the change now
Free Choice — freedom deepens commitment
Narrative — we live the stories we tell
Awareness — surface the assumptions

Grounded in social constructionism and the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions (Fredrickson, 2001) — positive emotion widens thinking and builds lasting resources. Developed by David L. Cooperrider & Suresh Srivastva, Case Western Reserve University (1987).

Private by design — your responses stay on this device and are never saved or sent anywhere.
