The VisionLogic AI Process | Appreciative Inquiry
VisionLogic · A Strengths-Based Process

The VisionLogic AI Process

Appreciative Inquiry — from what’s broken to what gives life.

A simple, powerful shift: instead of diagnosing what’s wrong, we study what already works — and build more of it.

What Is Appreciative Inquiry?

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a strengths-based way to grow. Developed by David Cooperrider & Suresh Srivastva, it begins from a quietly radical idea: the questions we ask shape the change we get. Ask “what’s wrong?” and you find problems. Ask “what gives life?” and you find strengths to build on.

At VisionLogic, AI is a lens we bring to growth of every kind. It doesn’t ignore what’s hard — it just refuses to make the problem the center of the story. The center is the life-giving core: the moments, values, and strengths that are already working, waiting to be grown.

The 5-D Cycle

one turn of the process — then begin again

Step 1
Define
“What do we want more of?”
Choose the focus — the topic worth growing.
Step 2
Discover
“What gives life?”
Find the best of what already is — the strengths and high points.
Step 3
Dream
“What might be?”
Envision the ideal — what becomes possible if the best became the norm.
Step 4
Design
“What should be?”
Co-construct it — put the structures and steps in place.
Step 5
Destiny
“How do we sustain it?”
Empower and live it — make it real, then begin the cycle again.

Inquiry and change happen together — the questions we ask begin the change, and the cycle repeats.

One Process, Every Scale

the same move, whether the “system” is one person or a whole organization

Individuals

Build on your strengths and what already works in your life.

Couples

Rediscover what first gave the relationship life — and grow it.

Families

Find the family’s best moments and make more of them.

Groups & Teams

Amplify what a team does well to move forward together.

Organizations

Lead change from strengths, not deficits — at any scale.

Whatever the size of the system, the move is the same: find the life-giving core, and build from it.

Why It Works

a few of the ideas underneath the process

Words create worlds

The language we use shapes the reality we experience.

Inquiry is intervention

The moment we ask a question, change has already begun.

What we study grows

Attention is fuel — focus on strengths and they expand.

Images pull the future

A vivid, positive picture of what’s possible draws us toward it.

See It — Then Work It

The infographic lays out the full 5-D cycle and its guiding principles on a single page you can keep or share. The AI Process tool takes you through the cycle itself, one question at a time.

Appreciative Inquiry was developed by David L. Cooperrider & Suresh Srivastva (Case Western Reserve University). The VisionLogic AI Process is an original application of that model to growth at every scale — individual, relational, and organizational.
