Sacred Balance Wheel
A Tool for Whole Soul Health & Wellness
Understanding the Medicine Wheel
The Medicine Wheel is an ancient symbol used by many Indigenous peoples to represent the interconnectedness of all aspects of life. It teaches us that true health and balance come from nurturing all parts of ourselves—not just our physical body, but also our mind, emotions, and spirit. Like the Sacred Tree with its roots, trunk, branches, and leaves all working together, we too must tend to all dimensions of our being.
This assessment wheel is divided into four elements corresponding to the four directions, with three categories within each element, creating twelve areas for self-evaluation. As you work with this tool, remember that the goal is not perfection, but awareness, balance, and growth.
The Four Elements & Twelve Categories
SPIRITUAL (East)
Illumination, Vision, Wisdom
The East represents the dawn, new beginnings, and spiritual awakening. It is where we connect to our higher purpose, cultivate our relationship with the sacred, and seek wisdom beyond the material world.
1. Spiritual Practices
Your connection to the sacred through prayer, meditation, ceremony, time in nature, or other practices that feed your spirit and connect you to something greater than yourself.
2. Higher Purpose
Your sense of meaning and calling in life. Understanding your unique gifts and how you are meant to serve the world. Living in alignment with your values and deepest truths.
3. Inner Peace
Your ability to find stillness, serenity, and centeredness regardless of external circumstances. Trusting in the flow of life and maintaining harmony within yourself.
EMOTIONAL (South)
Heart, Growth, Relationships
The South represents summer, youth, and the warmth of human connection. It is where we develop our capacity to love, express emotions authentically, and nurture relationships with ourselves and others.
4. Relationships
The quality of your connections with family, friends, community, and all your relations. Your ability to give and receive love, support, and authentic connection.
5. Emotional Health
Your capacity to feel, process, and express emotions in healthy ways. Understanding your feelings, healing old wounds, and maintaining emotional resilience.
6. Self-Expression
Your freedom to express your authentic self creatively and honestly. Sharing your voice, gifts, and unique perspective with confidence and without fear.
PHYSICAL (West)
Body, Introspection, Embodiment
The West represents autumn, the setting sun, and turning inward. It is where we honor our physical vessel, practice self-care, and reflect on how we inhabit and nourish our bodies.
7. Nutrition
The quality and consciousness of what you feed your body. Choosing foods that nourish and honor your physical vessel. Your relationship with eating and sustenance.
8. Movement
How you care for your body through physical activity, exercise, dance, or other forms of embodied practice. Honoring your body's need for movement and strength.
9. Rest & Renewal
Your ability to rest, restore, and renew your physical energy. Quality of sleep, relaxation practices, and honoring your body's need for downtime and healing.
MENTAL (North)
Clarity, Eldership, Knowledge
The North represents winter, eldership, and mental clarity. It is where we cultivate wisdom, engage in conscious thought, and develop the discipline of a focused mind in service to our community.
10. Critical Thinking
Your capacity for clear, rational thought, problem-solving, and discernment. Making wise decisions based on knowledge and reflection rather than impulse or emotion alone.
11. Learning & Growth
Your commitment to continuous growth through study, exploration, and skill development. Remaining curious and open to new ideas while honoring ancestral wisdom.
12. Mindfulness
Your practice of present-moment awareness. Observing your thoughts without becoming lost in them. Maintaining mental discipline and focus in daily life.
How to Use This Assessment
- 1. Set Sacred Intention: Before beginning, take a moment to breathe deeply and set an intention for honest self-reflection. This is not about judgment, but about seeing yourself clearly with compassion.
- 2. Rate Each Category: For each of the twelve categories, assess where you currently are on a scale of 0-100. Consider: Am I neglecting this area? Am I surviving? Am I thriving?
- 3. Observe Your Wheel: Each rating places a single dot on its spoke: a dot near the hub means that area is neglected and running on fumes; a dot near the rim means it is fed and flourishing. Your dots are connected to show the shape of the wheel you are rolling on today, set inside the round rim of your true wheel (100%). Almost no one gets a circle. Notice where your wheel bulges and where it caves in, and remember the wheelwright's order: first make it round, then make it bigger. The flat spots, not the strong spokes, determine how your life rides. Meet your shape with kindness; it is information, not an indictment.
- 4. Reflect on Connections: Notice how the elements influence each other. Physical exhaustion affects mental clarity. Spiritual disconnection impacts emotional wellbeing. Everything is related.
- 5. Choose Your Quarterly Focus: Your assessment reveals three priority areas for your Quarterly Quantum Leap. Focus on one category each month for the next 90 days. Monthly focus creates sustainable transformation without overwhelm.
- 6. Revisit and Reassess: Return to this assessment quarterly to acknowledge your progress and discover your focus areas for the next 90 days. You may also revisit monthly if it helps you stay engaged and motivated on your journey.
Walking the Path of Balance
The Sacred Tree teaches us that growth happens in cycles and seasons. Just as trees rest in winter and bloom in spring, we too move through times of retreat and expansion. Honor where you are on your journey.
Remember: Balance is not a destination but a practice. The Medicine Wheel reminds us that wholeness comes from tending to all parts of ourselves with patience, love, and dedication. May this tool serve you well as you walk your path.
