MindScaping™ Daily Journal
A 90-Day Practice for Deep Change
A few honest minutes each evening: value the growth-work you did, turn the day's sharpest frustration into a next step, notice the good you helped create, and point your mind toward what you want most.
Ponder your days. Value your growth. Design what comes next.
Welcome to MindScaping
You are holding more than a journal. You are holding a daily practice for deep, lasting change: a way of turning each ordinary day into something you learn from, value, and build on.
The idea underneath MindScaping is simple. We don't rise or fall on what happens to us, but on whether we ever stop to read it. Most of us live the experience and skip the lesson, and then wonder why the same patterns keep circling back. This journal is the antidote. A few honest minutes a day, and the days stop happening to you. You start reading them, and designing what comes next.
How to use it
Begin with the short setup pages: choose the activities you want to value, set your rates, and name a focus for the season ahead. Then work one two-page spread each evening. It takes only a few minutes. Do it consistently and the small reflections compound into something you can feel.
A note on resistance: it's normal to feel some the first week or two. Resistance is often just the old script noticing it's being rewritten. Welcome it, and keep your entries small enough that you'll actually do them.
Why the Practice Works
MindScaping weaves together a handful of principles that reinforce one another. The sum is greater than the parts.
BELIEF
You are already running a life-script that produces your current results. If you want different results, you don't need more willpower. You need a better script, practiced.
DAILY REINFORCEMENT
Lasting change is built by repetition over time, not by intensity in a weekend. Small, consistent reps are what re-pattern a habit.
WRITING BY HAND
Longhand slows you down and engages you more fully than typing. Putting it on paper, away from a screen, deepens the practice and settles the mind before sleep.
TIME OF DAY
The quiet stretch before sleep is a naturally receptive, reflective window. What you turn your attention to then tends to keep working in the background overnight.
DIRECTION
Ending on a clear, positive intention points the mind forward. The last thing you rehearse is the thing you carry into tomorrow.
The Daily Rhythm
Each evening you move through four short practices, in the order they appear on your daily pages. Together they take only a few minutes, and they are designed to build on one another: value, then aim; learn, then give thanks.
The Four Practices
1 · MindScaping Account™
Recognize the value you created today
Like a bank ledger, you "deposit" the growth-work you did, drawn from your 12 Balance Wheel categories, so effort you used to spend invisibly starts to register and compound. Carry forward yesterday's balance, log today's valued activities with their hours, rate, and value, total it, and write your new balance.
You're not chasing a number. You're teaching yourself to see the growth-work you already do.
2 · Goal Affirmation Script™
Hold your focus in the present tense
Close the left-hand page by rehearsing this week's focus as already true: "I have ___ and it makes me feel ___." Your aim gets practiced the way anything you want to get good at gets practiced, and the feeling is what makes it stick.
3 · Key Frustration Du Jour™
Turn the day's sharpest frustration into insight
A mini Significant Event Process: name it, brainstorm several possible responses without judging them, then choose one or two small actions to try. On your own, it dismantles a private rut. Done out loud with the people you share a life with, it can change a whole system.
4 · Angels & Miracles™
Turn and look for what went right
Record two or three good things, and how they came about, including any hand you had in them. Small wins count. Understanding the how is what lets you create more of it.
How to Use Each Day
Each day is a two-page spread. Work it in the quiet before sleep.
Left page — value, then aim
MindScaping Account™: carry forward yesterday's balance, then log today's valued activities with their hours, rate, and value. Total it, and write your new balance.
Goal Affirmation Script™: close the page by holding this week's focus in the present tense: "I have ___ and it makes me feel ___."
Right page — learn, then give thanks
Key Frustration Du Jour™: name the day's sharpest snag, brainstorm freely, and choose one or two actions to try.
Angels & Miracles™: record two or three good things, and how they came about. Make the simple sacred.
The printed journal's first few days include light gray hints beside each section to guide you. After that, the page is yours. Every page ends the same way: Make the simple sacred · Put another pebble in the bucket.
The Setup Pages
The 12 Balance Wheel categories. Your MindScaping Account draws its valued activities from the four aspects of a whole self, arranged like the four directions of the Sacred Wheel: Spiritual (East), Emotional (South), Physical (West), and Mental (North), three areas each. A balanced life isn't one where a single area is perfect; it's one where no area is quietly neglected.
My Pay Rates. Give your time a number. The simplest path is one rate for everything; or set a rate per activity if some matter more. Assigning a dollar value teaches the mind to treat your growth-work as worth showing up for.
The Six P's. The Balance Wheel names the areas of a whole life; the Six P's are how you give them time. Relational first (Personal, People, Peers), then functional (Planning, Preparation, Productivity). If work goes in first, relationships get the scraps, which is backward. Personal makes everything possible. People make everything meaningful. Productivity makes everything sustainable.
My Power Quarter. Plan one month at a time. Each week's focus is one goal from your Ideal Week, rehearsed nightly in your Goal Affirmation Script. Plan the coming month just before it starts, while you can still feel where you actually are.
"Put Another Pebble in the Bucket"
In the treatment groups where this journal was born, I kept a small bucket on a tray, half-filled with water, and everyone in the room held a little sack of polished pebbles. Each time someone participated (shared, asked a question, risked something honest) a pebble went into the water. No single pebble ever moved the level that the eye could see. No one's ever could. But the level rose all the same, and by the end of a good session the water was running over the lip and onto the tray. Suddenly the whole room could see what had been invisible all along: small efforts accumulate.
Your nightly page is a pebble. You will not see your life change from one entry; you are not meant to. But written each night, in the quiet minutes before sleep when the mind carries your intention into the night, the level rises. One evening you will look up and find the water at the lip.
So finish each page the way we ended group: put another pebble in the bucket.
— Kevin Brough
The Close: Day 90 and Beyond
My 90-Day Reflection. You did the quiet work, day after day. Before you begin the next quarter, read back through your pages and let them teach you one more time: What changed in me? Which patterns did I finally name? What am I most grateful for?
Continuing the practice. Change compounds. The people who keep at it don't just feel more driven; they get steadier, more balanced, and that steadiness spills into the rest of a life. Begin a new Power Quarter, set a fresh focus, carry your MindScaping Account forward, and keep reading your days.
The Printed Journal and This Online Companion
The printed journal is the practice
MindScaping™ Daily Journal: A 90-Day Practice for Deep Change (Third Edition, 5.5 × 8.5 in., 202 pages on cream paper) holds the full method: the setup pages, ninety two-page daily spreads, the pebble tracker, and the 90-day close. Writing by hand, on paper, away from a screen, is one of the five principles the practice rests on. If you can, do the nightly page in the book.

Set Up Your MindScaping Practice
Step 1: Identify Your Valued Activities
We'll walk through the 12 Balance Wheel categories, the four aspects of a whole self arranged like the four directions of the Sacred Wheel. For each category, list one to three activities you want to value: the deposits in your MindScaping Account.
SPIRITUAL (East)
Illumination, Vision, Wisdom
Prayer, meditation, ceremony, time in nature, or practices that connect you to something greater.
Actions aligned with your sense of meaning, calling, and unique gifts.
Practices that cultivate stillness, serenity, and centeredness.
Step 2: Emotional Activities
EMOTIONAL (South)
Heart, Growth, Relationships
Nurturing connections with family, friends, community, and all your relations.
Processing emotions, healing old wounds, maintaining emotional resilience.
Expressing your authentic self creatively and honestly.
Step 3: Physical Activities
PHYSICAL (West)
Body, Introspection, Embodiment
Nourishing your body with conscious food choices.
Physical activity, exercise, dance, or embodied practice.
Quality sleep, relaxation, and honoring your body's need for restoration.
Step 4: Mental Activities & Pay Rates
MENTAL (North)
Clarity, Eldership, Knowledge
Clear thought, problem-solving, and wise decision-making.
Study, exploration, skill development, and continuous improvement.
Present-moment awareness, mental discipline, and focused attention.
Set Your Hourly Rate
Give your time a number. The simplest path is one rate for everything; you can override it per entry on the daily page. Assigning a dollar value teaches the mind to treat your growth-work as worth showing up for.
◎ Select Double-Pay Activities
Your most challenging or breakthrough behaviors (up to five) earn double pay. Which of the activities above deserve it?
Step 5: My Power Quarter & the Goal Affirmation Script
The Balance Wheel names the areas of a whole life. The Six P's are how you give them time: block the relational modes first (Personal, People, Peers), then the functional ones (Planning, Preparation, Productivity). Set your Power Quarter goals from that Ideal Week, and each week's focus becomes one goal you have actually blocked into your week.
My Power Quarter
Plan one month at a time. Fill in Month 1 now, and each next month the week before it begins, while you can still feel where you actually are.
The Goal Affirmation Script™
"I have ___ and it makes me feel ___."
Each night you close the left-hand page by holding this week's focus in the present tense, written as already true, in your own hand. Keep the wording present tense and attach a feeling. The feeling is what makes it stick.
Examples
"I have walked after dinner five nights this week and it makes me feel steady and clear."
"I have had one unhurried conversation with each of my kids and it makes me feel close to them."
"I have finished the first draft and it makes me feel capable and relieved."
Step 6: The Key Frustration Du Jour
Each evening you take the day's sharpest frustration and turn it into insight, a mini Significant Event Process:
1. Identify: What challenged you most today? Be specific.
2. Brainstorm: Possible responses, without judging them. Aim for several.
3. Select: The best one to three actions to try.
Step 7: Angels & Miracles, and My Commitment
The last practice of the night: turn and look for what went right. Record two or three good things, and how they came about, including any hand you had in them.
For each win or blessing, note:
What happened? The win, blessing, or small miracle.
How did it come about, and did you have a hand in it? Understanding the how is what lets you create more of it.
My Commitment
Change asks for a small, repeated yes. Make a short contract with yourself here, not a grand vow, just an honest agreement to show up for a few minutes a night and read your own life on purpose.
"For the next ninety days, I will spend a few honest minutes each evening with this practice — valuing my growth, learning from my day, and aiming toward what matters most."
