Stewardship Assessment™

Builders or Burners: A Framework for Sustainable Resource Stewardship

Developed by Kevin Brough, MAMFT

Welcome to Your Stewardship Assessment

Your life is shaped by how you steward what you have been given. Every choice with your energy, time, money, relationships, and inner capacities either builds sustainable reserves or burns them down faster than they can be replenished.

“All resources are ultimately entrusted to us; we are stewards, not owners. The question isn’t whether you deserve what you have, but what you’ll do with it.”
— LifeScaping principle

The Two Pathways

BUILDERS (Renewing)

  • Generate more than they consume
  • Create positive cycles and upward spirals
  • Lead to flourishing and resilience
  • Focus on long-term sustainability
  • Operate from abundance and wisdom

BURNERS (Depleting)

  • Consume more than they replenish
  • Create negative cycles and downward spirals
  • Lead to exhaustion, debt, and dysfunction
  • Focus on short-term relief
  • Operate from scarcity and fear
The science behind it. Builders and Burners mirror Conservation of Resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989; Hobfoll et al., 2018): people who already have resources are better placed to gain more (gain spirals), while losses make further losses more likely (loss spirals). Losses also hit harder than equal gains, which is why protecting what you have matters as much as adding more.

Your Stewardship Action Plan

“Sustainable living isn’t about perfection; it’s about direction. It’s about recognizing patterns, making conscious choices, and consistently moving toward life-giving practices rather than life-draining ones.”
